Woman Crush Sunday (WCS): Blessing Oborodudu



This is Blessing Oborodudu!. Blessing is a Nigerian freestyle wrestler born on the 12th of March 1989. She attended Saint Jude's girls secondary school, Yenagoa in Bayelsa State where her love for wrestling started.
The 163cm tall lady and 63 kg weight champion had her first sport outing in 2006 at the national sports festival in Ogun state but she didn't win. In 2008, she broke into the national team but could not travel for an official assignment due to visa problem. In 2009 she made her way to African Championship but won only bronze until 2010 where she started winning gold till now.

In 2012, she competed in the freestyle 63 kg event at the 2012 summer Olympic and was eliminated in the 1/8 finals by Monika Michalik. In 2014 she won the bronze medal in the women's middle weight common wealth games. In 2016, she competed in the women's middle weight olympics but lost out in the second round. In 2017, she won a gold medal for women category at 2017 Islamic Solidarity claims this gave her an Olympic scholarship that helped raise her to number 3 rank in the world. In 2018 Gold coast common wealth games in the 68 kg women's freestyle wrestling events she won a Gold medal defeating Canada's Danielle Lappage. In 2020, she won the gold medal in the women's freestyle 68kg wrestling competition this earned her, her 10th African title in Algeria after winning 14 medals. She is currently the 2nd in rank, women Olympic worldwide.
                                   
According to her, Her passion for wrestling and the encouraging words of her coaches has kept her going, in her words "training everyday makes one better".
Blessing Oborodudu is an epitome of consistency yields success. You can be anything you want, the choice is yours and the future is female.

Domestic Voilence in Nigeria heightens in the face of economic hardship-majority of victims are women!

A recent Public Opinion poll conducted by NOIPolls Limited in partnership with Project Alert on domestic violence has revealed an increasing prevalence of domestic violence across Nigeria in recent times as reported by about 8 in 10 (78 percent) respondents. This prevalence is highest in the South-West geo-political zone (86 percent) and lowest in the South-South zone (70 percent). More findings revealed that 54 percent of Nigerians have suffered a form of domestic violence or know someone that has experienced domestic violence in their homes with majority of the victims being women as stated by 75 percent of respondents. Just this week, a man in Aba Abia state allegedly beat his wife into coma for lying to him that she has not been paid her salary after commissioner for finance Obinna Oriaku mis-informed the Abia public on radio that civil servants salary arrears have been paid.
