At such a time as this: What women can do

The peaceful EndSars protest turned violent on Tuesday 20th of October causing an uproar in different parts of the nation particularly in Lagos State. In Lagos State, Governor Sanwo-Olu said there was no fatality recorded in the gunshot incident that occurred at the Lekki tollgate during the ENDSARS protest on Tuesday night. A report has it that about three buses were filled with armed thugs on the popular Ahmadu Bello Way. Another report says that the thugs were escorted by two Prada vehicles whose riders were masked to cover their identities.
With the recent happenings, I am particularly persuaded that women  can play a major role in calming the tensed situation in. Nigeria:
. Using the correct body language and behaviour:
The body language we choose for ourselves are powerful, they can create truly safe spaces for us by creating a sense of home in the unknown; a sense of comfort in newness. With this, we can confront the chaos of our cities and still feel safe. We can insist on embracing peace and preaching it in our homes and neighbourhood.
.Positive parenting:
At this point what we tell our children is very important, our conversation with our children concerning the nation  should be positive at this time.Across the world, evidence is growing that parenting courses can help families immensely reduce violence against the nation at large and even reduce violence between parents. Let us intentionally encourage our children and wards to embrace peace. Violence is never an option.
.Healing Trauma:
Violence causes trauma but trauma can also cause violence.Trauma comes in many forms, from parental conflict to senseless shootings to the pain inflicted by loss of loved ones. Addressing this damage, for example through trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy could help to break the cycle of violence.
Like the mother hen, most women are gifted with the warmth that is required by trauma patient. It could be just the right words in form of messages and sharing some essentials like food with the young people.
.Female Self Defence:
Feminist Self-Defence training and some recent randomised controlled trials have demonstrated dramatic results of reduced violence, women should also be able to fight in defense for themselves if attacked unaware. Women must not be cowered by the evil around us and accept that we are the weaker vessels. We should stand up for ourselves and our loved ones even in times like this.
. Policing with communities:
Policing doesn’t have to be limited to iron-first interventions. Women forming groups that  build trust between their  communities and other communities together with security agents has reaped immense benefits across the world: In Brazil, community-oriented policing contributed to a dramatic crime drop. We can start from our little online groups to preach justice and fairness and be seen to living up to it. Make no mistakes, criminals know good people and research has shown that they usually respect honourable people. Stand for justice always.
There is never too much to give for peace and justice at a time like this. We must rise to the occasion and challenge evil to leave our land. It is about time. Let's do this!

The Empowered woman

I think being a woman,I mean a real woman is one of the hardest things ever!. You won't agree with this only if you are not a woman, but if you are a woman, then congratulations to you.You are a mysterious being but then again this congratulation goes to the 'real woman'. The real woman is that person that makes everything difficult seem easy. She is a hard worker, faithful friend and partner,a good manager,a home maker,a lover,a confidant,a mother,a sister,a daughter,a visioneer...Someone,may say,"Yea, ok...I'm not a mother or I'm single and so does that make me not a real woman?Of course not!. Age,class, status, beauty or achievements do not define a real woman, but character does. I can't but wonder at the stories we hear these days about women.I marvel at the rate of evil perpetuated by women in our society.Prostitution is old wives tale but when women are involved in armed robbery, kidnappings, terrorism, gang rape, adultery, fraud to mention a few, then by a...

The Career Woman

I stumbled upon this beautiful article on IFP while researching on other stuff and thought to share it. It's a 4 minutes read. I totally agree with it. Gender equality seems to be the one issue that isn't going away. Many of us like to believe sexism is something that only plagued the workplaces of yesteryear, but unfortunately it still exists. Don't believe us? Well, in 2016 just 57% of the world's  working-age women  were in employment, compared to 70% of their male counterparts. And even the females who were in work were struggling to catch up with the men. Women with  full-time jobs  still earn only about 77% of their male counterparts' earnings. Of course, the issue is complex and many expect that because most countries have made it illegal to pay women less than men, that gender inequality has fixed itself. However, problems surrounding  unconscious bias , parental leave, and outdated stereotypes about gender roles persist in the workplace. But what are th...

Domestic Voilence in Nigeria heightens in the face of economic hardship-majority of victims are women!

A recent Public Opinion poll conducted by NOIPolls Limited in partnership with Project Alert on domestic violence has revealed an increasing prevalence of domestic violence across Nigeria in recent times as reported by about 8 in 10 (78 percent) respondents. This prevalence is highest in the South-West geo-political zone (86 percent) and lowest in the South-South zone (70 percent). More findings revealed that 54 percent of Nigerians have suffered a form of domestic violence or know someone that has experienced domestic violence in their homes with majority of the victims being women as stated by 75 percent of respondents. Just this week, a man in Aba Abia state allegedly beat his wife into coma for lying to him that she has not been paid her salary after commissioner for finance Obinna Oriaku mis-informed the Abia public on radio that civil servants salary arrears have been paid.
